The Cradle That Rocks Above The Abyss, gilded and painted wood, 95 x 78 x 63.5 cm “The cradle that rocks above an abyss, and common sense tells us that our existence is but a brief crack of light between two eternities of darkness. Although the two are identical twins, man, as a rule views the prenatal abyss with more calm than the one he is heading for (at some forty-five hundred heartbeats per hour.” The opening two sentences from “Speak, Memory” Vladimir Nabokov’s autobiography. These two sentences were the catalyst for something I have had in mind for more than ten years since creating a few shapes pieces in card for a maquette of a piece exploring DNA. Those shapes developed into arms and legs and the curved section was something that suggested a rocking motion. The base the abyss. The two figures utilise the same legs to combine hinting at a standing figure supporting someone in difficulty.
